Cash and checks are most commonly given as charitable gifts, but they don’t necessarily provide the donor with the best tax advantages. Talk to your accountant or financial advisor about strategies that you can use to maximize your gifts to St. Edwards.. Gifting shares of a stock or a mutual fund directly to St. Edwards allows you to avoid capital gains tax. Appreciated shares that have been held longer than one year offer the greatest benefit. You can deduct the charitable gift for the full market value of the shares, and you will not owe any capital gains tax, which can be as high as 20%. St. Edwards is able to sell the shares, and as a non-profit organization, they do not need to pay taxes on the sale proceeds.

Your offertory gift is most easily accomplished through regular automatic withdrawals from your credit card or checking account through our secure online giving platform, GiveCentral. While online giving is preferred for the reasons listed above, you may choose to give through weekly offertory envelopes. If you are not registered for GiveCentral, our parish office will ensure you are receiving weekly offertory envelopes by mail.

Planned Giving

There are other ways to be generous to St. Edward's that also come with tax advantages to you and your family. Here are some ideas to discuss with your finacial planner or tax advisor:

• Life Insurance Beneficiary: You can make St. Edward Parish a beneficiary of a life insurance plan.
• Bequests: These are among the easiest gifts to make. With the help of an advisor, you can include language in your will or trust specifying a gift be made to family, friends, and/or St. Edward Parish as part of your estate plan.
• IRA Rollover and/or Beneficiary: If you are 70 1/2 or older, an IRA charitable rollover is a way you can help us continue our mission and give yourself a tax break. You can also name St. Edward Parish a beneficiary of your IRA.
